Zingerman’s Bake House, an esteemed artisan bakery renowned for its traditional breads, cakes, and pastries in the Ann Arbor area, has taken a significant step towards sustainability by transitioning its delivery fleet to propane. This move reflects the bakery’s commitment to environmental responsibility and operational efficiency.
Jason Restrick, Co-Managing Partner of Zingerman’s Bake House, shared his enthusiasm for the switch, saying, “We’ve been using propane vehicles for over 11 years, and the benefits have been remarkable.”
The transition began with a vision to reduce the bakery’s environmental footprint, which included updating their delivery vehicles to run on propane.
Environmental Benefits and Cost Savings
Propane is a low-carbon alternative fuel that offers substantial environmental advantages. The EPA even lists propane as a clean fuel for its clean, non-toxic properties that do not contaminate the air, soil, or groundwater.
Restrick noted, “Propane is a low-emission fuel that produces significantly fewer greenhouse gases compared to diesel and gasoline. Our vehicles have zero issues with the fuel systems, and the trucks run cleanly.”
This clean-burning fuel cuts emissions of toxins and carcinogens by up to 96% compared to gasoline, making it a superior choice for reducing air pollution. The cost savings associated with propane are equally impressive.
“It’s actually been a cost-saving measure compared to traditional gas prices,” Restrick explained.
Propane’s lower fuel costs and reduced maintenance needs result in substantial financial benefits for fleets, making it an economically viable option.
Operational Efficiency and Safety
The operational efficiency of propane-powered vehicles is another key advantage. Zingerman’s Bake House has experienced smooth operations with their propane fleet, and Restrick emphasizes the reliability of these vehicles: “We’ve had zero problems with our fuel systems, which is impressive.”
Since propane is a clean fuel, there is less carbon buildup in the engine, leading to fewer maintenance requirements like oil changes and increasing the vehicle’s lifespan.
Safety is also a notable benefit. Propane is a clean and safe fuel, with straightforward handling and minimal environmental impact. Propane fuel tanks are made with reinforced steel and are 20 times more puncture-resistant than gasoline and diesel tanks which can be made from plastic or thin metal.
The bakery’s on-site propane fueling station, established with the help of a local propane supplier, further enhances convenience. The fueling station is similar to a regular gas station: You pull up, fill up for about 5-7 minutes, and go.
By embracing propane, Zingerman’s Bake House not only contributes to a cleaner environment but also enjoys operational and financial benefits. Their experience serves as an inspiring example of how propane can enhance sustainability and efficiency in fleet operations.
We’ve been using propane vehicles for over 11 years, and the benefits have been remarkable.”
